Answer: This is a very common issue, but don't despair, eventually he'll use the toilet for both wees and poos, it's often a matter of time and maturity. Some parents just stop using nappies altogether and put the child in undies, but obviously there's a real potential for accidents and mess. You could try sitting him on the toilet regularly and when he's indicating he needs to go, role model to him what's involved, make sure the toilet is very easily accessible, leave the nappy on him but cut a hole in it so he feels the security of wearing it but the poo drops out and into the toilet and over a period of time, you can remove the nappy and he goes without it. Often this is an issue related to a bit of fear and anxiety for the child and once they learn to "let go" without a nappy on, and they've done this a few times, they just get the hang of it and don't look back.
