She cries and screams when she gets tired of sitting in her high chair
Hi Sally Anne, My 11 month old baby will start crying and screaming when she gets tired of sitting in her high chair even though she has not finished her dinner. If we pick her up and hold her and/or play with her she will continue to eat but that does not teach her good eating manners/habits. I have tried taking her off her highchair when she cries and put her on the "naughty mat" - but is that giving in to her demand to leave the highchair ? Also I am then worried that she hasn`t eaten enough is not getting all the necessary nutrients.
As parents we are constantly worrying about our child not getting enough to eat. I remember force-feeding my first child because she hardly ate at all! However I was worrying needlessly (and I did NOT do this to my other 3 children!). A healthy child will not starve themselves if good food is available to them. When we encourage our children to eat when their stomachs are letting them know that they are full, we are teaching them to override their body’s natural regulation. This could potentially lead them to overeating in the future.
If your child appears happy and healthy, then she is getting sufficient nutrients (even if she hasn’t eaten any of her greens today!). Their eating patterns change during various growth spurts, so we should try not to stress too much about it. Put the “naughty mat” away, and trust that if you continue to offer your daughter the right foods, that she will eat when she is hungry. Good luck!
All the Best,
