He doesn`t seem interested in any signs other than `drink`
My 20 month old son Archie signs for drink only he doesn`t seem to be interested in any other signs. How can i encourage him without seeming forceful? I really believe signing is a great communication skill.
Answer: Hi Kristie, Thank you for your question. Firstly how many signs have you introduced to Archie? It is important to start slowly introducing only a handful of practical and motivational signs. To encourage Archie to sign, it is essential to include signs that Archie is interested in. These could include teddy bear, book, music etc. Each baby is different but be sure to include signs you know that interest Archie. Another way to encourage him is after you have signed and said the word, move his hand to also create the sign while you say the word. This will help him to understand what you are trying to achieve and encourage him to sign. Is it possible to get more people signing to him? The more people who sign to your baby, the faster your baby can begin to understand that baby sign language is a communication tool and how to use it. I hope this helps. Let me know how you progress. Happy Signing! Jackie
