It's called the silly season for a reason - it's the one time during the year where we give ourselves full license to eat and drink as much as we like. If you've just found out you're pregnant but are not quite ready to tell people your news, not drinking may arouse suspicion. Here are a few ways to hide the fact that you're not drinking.

1. Get your own drinks and put them in a wine glass or champagne flute.

For some strange reason, not drinking around people who are tipsy causes them to do anything in their power to try and convince you to get drunk too. However if you get your own drink and put it in a wine or champagne flute, they won't be able to convince you otherwise. If you want to make it look like you're drinking alcohol, you can either opt for something like Apeltizer (we love the one with no added sugar) which looks like champagne or a non-alcoholic sparkling wine (we love Maggie Beer's non-alcoholic Sparkling Ruby Cabernet).

2. Make your own mocktails

Even if everyone is drinking, you can tempt those around you with a delicious mocktails in order to give people a refreshing break from drinking. Here are two of our favourites:

Coconut, cucumber, lime and mint cooler
Ingredients:
4 cups of coconut water
2 cucumbers thinly sliced
1/2 cup of lime juice
1/4 cup of sugar (optional and you can always substitute with honey or agave if you'd prefer a healthier option)
1/4 cup of chopped mint leaves

Combine ingredients and pour over ice. Let sit for 1-2 hours to absorb all the flavours. Serve in a tumbler or cocktail glass with a garnish of a few mint leaves.

Cantaloupe Cooler
Ingredients:
1 ripe cantaloupe, skin and seeds removed and chopped into slices or chunks.
1/2 cup of fresh orange juice
1/4 cup of fresh lime juice
1/4 cup of fresh mint leaves
Ice cubes

Place all ingredients in the blender and whizz until smooth. Serve over ice with a garnish of mint leaves. If you prefer a more frozen dacquiri sort of feeling, simply peel and de-seed the cantaloupe, chop into chunks and freezer over night. You'll end up with more of a frozen slushie version of this delicious mocktail!

We also love the simplicity of ginger beer and a squeeze of fresh lime.

3. Always have a drink in your hand
If you have a drink in your hand nobody can ask you if you want one - simple!

4. Offer to get drinks for other people

It's a simple but effective way to get out of drinking.

5. Tell a white lie

Of course you can always tell small untruths about how you have a migraine or are on medication.

6. Be the designated driver

Everyone loves a designated driver. Offer to drive your partner or friends to the event. Once you get there, telling people you're not drinking because you're driving is the easiest way in the book to avoid booze.

We'd love to hear from you - how do you deal with not drinking around friends and family this Christmas? Also have you got a favourite mocktail recipe you'd love to share?
