Further along than I thought .. Lock Rss

Hi All,

I thought I was 8 weeks pregnant this week, so went along to my doctor for blood tests and a referral to my obstetrician. Just got my results back and my hcg levels indicate that I'm 11-12 weeks pregnant. This would mean that I was actually pregnant during my last period. Just curious as to whether this has been the case for anyone else? I can't remember from my last pregnancy, when is the first ultrasound usually? I have my first appointment with the obstetrician next week, but by then I'll be 13 weeks.

I've been totally caught off-guard, but at least I now know why my pants don't fit!

Cheers,
jellytot
You can get a free ultrasound before 12 weeks called a dating scan, just need a referral from your doc to ultrasound place.

Please don't say that. LOL I have some weird stuff going on right now and half suspect that I could be but keep telling myself it ain't true cause AF is still around and it wasn't with my other 2 pregnancies.

Am too scared to POAS, not only cause a 3rd is a bone of contention between DP and I but because it is a BFN I will have wasted $10 AND feel like a prize idiot. LOL

Has anyone mentioned the possibility of twins to you? Not to scare you some more, but that might explain the blood results....but guess it depends on whether you know when you got pregnant or not.

Hmmmm....maybe I should shut up now??????

*backing quietly out the door*

There can be the NT scan at anytime between 12 weeks and 13weeks 6 days (not all hospitals do this scan for every patient - mine doesn't do the scan unless you fall into the risk catagories). After that the next scan is normally at about 18-20 weeks.

You could ask your GP for a referral for a dating scan to be done privately (there are some places that will bulk bill but you may need to pay for this). As its done privately you can normally get in fairly quickly and that would give you a fairly good idea about how far along you actually are.

What was your last af like? Lots of ladies on here talk about implantation bleeding when they fall pregnant (never experienced it personally so I don't know much about it though). I have also heard of people who have experienced bleeding like af while still being pregnant. I had af like bleeding for two weeks after finding out I was pregnant (scared me silly until we found out the cause since I already knew I was pregnant). In my case the bleeding was caused by a haemotoma (small collection of blood) that had formed when Kermit implanted and I was just gradually losing that blood over time. It wasn't a problem with the pregnancy and Kermit is going well.

I think the best way (and probably the way that will put your mind at ease) is to ask your gp for a referal for a scan that way you'll know pretty definately how far along you really are.

All the best with this pregnancy.

Leisa.
Yeah I wouldn't go by HCG levels to date a pregnancy, there is just too much of a range in the levels that are concerned normal. Or the other option is that you are having twins (HCG tends to be higher in twin pregnancies). I'm surprise you haven't been referred for a dating scan. Perhaps you should do what Leisa suggests and go for a private one as you will need to do that NOW as dating are most accurate between 6-8 weeks. All the best

Yup I would go straight back to your GP and get a refferal for a dating scan and usually you don't need to go private its normal free.
get a dating scan so you will know for sure and if it is twins you'll be getting the care you'll need asap
HI there,

I also was pregnant when i had my period. I noticed i had a normal period then another two weeks later. Then i had the inplantaion bleeding so they called it.

I also found out i was 2 weeks ahead when i had my scans at 5 weeks and 9 ending up being 11 weeks, then my normal scna at 12 weeks, it gets very confussing cause now it has put my due dates out of whack, and now have another scan coming up on 26th jan to see bubs growth and weight and if he is hitting a certain weight ill be getting induced.

It has been a very confussing rollercoaster witht he dates so i know how u feel.

Wish you all the best

Jenna

The same thing happened to me. I actually saw my OB at what I thought was 9 weeks only to find out I was actually 13 weeks. It isn't uncommon but obviously not the norm. On the bright side you have 4 weeks less to have to wait until you meet you new one.

Hi All,

Thank you all so much for your replies - I've been a bit slack in responding. Just an update.. I saw my OBGYN last week and apparently blood tests are not an accurate way of determining how far along you are. He did an ultrasound and I was 9 weeks as I had initially thought.. phew .. a few more weeks of preparation time before baby arrives!
