First periods Rss

My 9yo daughter came to me on Monday and told me she was bleeding. I can't believe she has her period already at 9. It seems so young, considering I got mine at 14!

Anyway, we've had a talk and I've bought & shown her how to use sanitary items and extra care in hygiene etc. She's quite mature for her age and handled it well and isn't scared or worried. In fact she was quite knowledgeable about it anyway. She had no questions but knows she can come to me and openly talk about anything, anytime.

My question is, is it supposed to be heavy? This is her 5th day of bleeding and shows no sign of slowing down. Is it because it's the first one? My first one (at 14) and even now is so light and only lasts a few days, so I'm a little worried. I thought I'd have a few more years before I had to worry about this!!

Thanks heaps

I think the age is about right to get her first period, my sister was the same age!

Perhaps call HealthDirect (or another health care service available on the phone) if you are worried about the heaviness of the bleeding? They are usually pretty helpful.
Wow, what a surprise that must have been for you - I would never have thought girls could get it that early!
I too got mine at 14, and I remember it being very heavy and lasting about 10 days. So everything could be normal for your girl.
Unlike you, my mum was not helpful at all, I went to her and said "I think I've got my period", and she goes "what do you mean you think" - duh, I had never had one before, of course I wasn't sure. So when I was still bleeding a week later and asked mum for more pads, she goes "Still? Why?" <img src='https://www.huggies.com.au/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='<_<' /> . I'm determined to deal with this moment in my girls lives a lot better than she did with me!

Sorry, got a little off topic there hey?
