I’m sorry that things are so tough for you and your little boy. I’m sorry too that your doctor doesn’t seem to understand or can’t work out what is going on. As hard as it may be, please keep persevering so you can find some help for your baby.
Has he been trialled on any reflux medications to help with it at all? If so did they make a difference? If he hasn’t perhaps this is something you could ask your doctor about.
One possibility that comes to mind is whether food sensitivities could be an issue (while cow’s milk protein intolerance or allergy seems to be the most common food sensitivity in babies with reflux, other foods may also be involved, such as soy, wheat, egg). This may be something worth considering, particularly as he is so unsettled. While HA formulas can sometimes help, there are formulas that doctors can prescribe e.g. Neocate, EleCare, that may be even more helpful.
If you are not comfortable using soy formula or don’t think it has made a difference, I think it is important that you discuss this with your doctor. Did the doctor explain why he/she suggested you use soy formula?? Is he/she considering the possibility of food sensitivities as well? You may be interested to know that soy formulas are often not recommended in babies under the age of 6 months (in line with the Australian consensus panel recommendations on formulas used to treat cow’s milk allergy), so you may prefer to discuss other options with the doctors.
On a more personal note, from someone who has been through exactly what you are going through, please persist with your doctors, and if you don’t get anywhere with one, find another one until you find one that will support you and your little boy in a way that you need. This is very important, when my daughter was born I didn’t think it was important and ended up sticking with a specialist who did not specialise in gastroenterology and couldn’t fathom what was going on with my daughter. We have recently made the change to a paediatric gastroenterologist who is fantastic and is supporting me 100%. There is hope out there so please do not give up, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and you will get through it, even though it seems so hard right now.
If your doctors do decide your bub has reflux, there are some management ideas on our website (at www.reflux.org.au
) that you may find helpful as well (if your doctors do diagnose your bub with reflux).
I hope that information helps. I’m sorry it has been so difficult, but please trust your instincts and continue looking for the answers you need, whether it is reflux or not. Please also talk to your doctor whenever you have concerns.
