My concern lies in the sodium content of varies food items
My daugther is almost 10 months old now. She is eating a variety of solids and I am introducing her to foods which the family eats. My concern lies in the sodium content of varies food items i.e. canned sardines and baked beans. I buy the salt reduced options, but Iam not sure if the sodium level is still too high for a baby. (as Iam sure no salt is the answer, but even casseroles and the yummy Winter foods that one makes usually comprise of stock). Can you please advise what amount in miligrams would be considered too much salt on the food labels.
Curently there are no set upper limits for sodium for infants, for a child 12 months plus it is 1000 mg (1 g/d), so this may give you a bit of a guide.
You are right, no added sodium is ideal but like you have said this is the real world and that’s just not how much of our food products are. So the best way forward is to do as you are doing, offer fresh food as a preference, when using commercial food opt for salt-reduced (not that this means it is low in salt mind you, just that it is lower than it was). Look for products that have 120 mg or less per 100g column, this is a good guide.
I hope this helps, sounds to me that you are on the right track. Overall if a diet is varied and full of healthy food you should be fine, occasionally things go over, but that’s to be expected.
